Smart process industries recycle and reuse water

2018-10-04

– Water scarcity is not a trend, it’s a fact. And it highly affects the process industry, says Ulrika Wahlström, Innovation Project Manager, IMCG.

The Horizon 2020 project Inspirewater is working to enable the process industry to implement sustainable wastewater treatment solutions.

EU puts great effort into the development of Europe as a leader in green production and industrial waste water management. Inspirewater technologies will increase water and resource efficiency by 20-30% in the process industry, initially focusing on the steel and chemical industries. The project aims to find innovative techniques to increase water and raw material efficiency in resource demanding steel- and chemical industry and to support implementation of new resource efficient technologies.

A magnetic separator, a catalyst and different kinds of membranes are being tested at the sites of Dow Water Solutions, Sandvik, ArcelorMittal and Clariant. IMCG manages the innovation process within exploitation and market analysis in order to create value and impact of the results by creating acceptance in the industry, managing regulatory barriers and developing business models that will be viable after the project is finished.

– Inspirewater provides an opportunity to showcase new technologies, says Lorena Barberà Campos, Technical Sales Representative at Dow Water Solutions.

IVL Swedish Environmental Institute is the coordinator of the project and emphasizes that Inspirewater has high ambitions to make market impact.

– Inspirewater is a sustainable EU project looking at water reuse and achieving to reach zero liquid discharge, which helps us in turn, to completely reuse the water used in our operations, says Dr. Vidhya Chittoor, Corporate Environmental Expert at Clariant.
